Short answer

For a general query as an active or deferred member, call 0300 330 1346 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm; +44 191 283 8918 from outside the UK). If you're already receiving your NHS Pension, the dedicated pensioner line is 0345 121 2522 (+44 191 283 0303 from abroad). NHS Pensions also offers an online contact form, a general member email (nhsbsa.pensionsmember@nhsbsa.nhs.uk), a separate complaints-only email (pensionscomplaints@nhsbsa.nhs.uk), and a postal address: NHS Pensions, PO Box 683, Unit 5, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE5 9EE. Have your membership number and National Insurance number ready before you contact them, whichever route you use.

Which route for which query

The quickest contact method depends on what you need. Many routine questions do not need a call at all:

Are the NHS Pensions numbers free to call?

Not freephone, but cheap. 0300 and 0345 are 03 numbers. Under Ofcom's rules, a call to an 03 number costs no more than a call to an ordinary UK landline number and counts towards any inclusive minutes in your mobile or landline plan. If your plan includes UK calls, expect these to be included. If you pay per minute, you pay the standard geographic rate. From abroad, use the +44 191 numbers in the table above, and check your provider's international rates.

Social media: general queries only

NHS Pensions maintains a presence on Facebook and X (@nhs_pensions) for general help. They're explicit that this is for broad questions only — never share your National Insurance number, membership number, date of birth or other personal details there, since case-specific queries can't be handled through social media anyway.

What to have ready before you get in touch

  • ✓ Your 8-digit NHS Pension Scheme membership number
  • ✓ Your National Insurance number
  • ✓ Your full name and date of birth
  • ✓ A clear, specific description of what you need — a query, an estimate request, a nomination update, or a formal complaint are handled differently
  • ✓ If you're contacting them on someone else's behalf, be ready to explain your relationship to the member and provide authorisation if asked

Realistic response-time expectations

  • • Phone query: often resolved on the call, during published hours
  • • Early resolution of a complaint: an initial contact attempt, generally quicker than a full formal review
  • • Formal IDRP Stage 1 complaint: aim to respond within two months — see our IDRP guide
  • • Written Estimate request: up to 40 working days (longer for transfer-in valuations) — see our guide on getting an NHS Pension forecast
  • • Processing can take longer than usual during periods of high demand

Frequently asked questions

What is the NHS Pensions phone number? +
For active and deferred members it is 0300 330 1346. If you are already receiving your NHS Pension, call 0345 121 2522. NHSBSA's contact page lists Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. From outside the UK, members use +44 191 283 8918 and pensioners use +44 191 283 0303.
Is the NHS Pensions helpline number free? +
The 0300 and 0345 numbers are not freephone, but they are 03 numbers. Ofcom's rules say calls to 03 numbers cost no more than a call to an ordinary UK landline (01 or 02) number and must be included in any inclusive minutes you have. So if your mobile or landline plan includes UK calls, the call is normally covered, and if you pay per minute you pay the standard rate. Check your own provider's terms if you are unsure.
What are the NHS Pensions opening hours? +
NHSBSA's contact page for NHS Pensions lists Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and does not list weekend or bank holiday opening. It publishes one set of hours rather than a separate set for each line, so confirm on the NHSBSA contact page if you are planning around a particular day.
What is the NHS Pensions address in Newcastle? +
NHS Pensions, PO Box 683, Unit 5, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE5 9EE. If you use a handwritten envelope, you need to pay the postage yourself, because Royal Mail does not accept handwritten Freepost envelopes or pre-paid envelopes with an altered address.
What is the NHS Pensions email address? +
The general member address is nhsbsa.pensionsmember@nhsbsa.nhs.uk. A separate address, pensionscomplaints@nhsbsa.nhs.uk, is for completed complaint forms only, so use the right one for what you need.
Does NHS Pensions have a live webchat? +
At the time of writing, NHS Pensions' main published member contact routes are phone, an online contact form, post, and limited-scope social media — we didn't find a standing public live webchat service advertised on NHSBSA's own contact pages. If one is introduced, NHSBSA's own contact page is the place it would be announced; don't assume a chat widget you encounter elsewhere claiming to be NHS Pensions is genuine.
What's the difference between the member number and the pensioner number? +
0300 330 1346 is for people still building up their pension (active or deferred members) with a general query. 0345 121 2522 is specifically for people already receiving their NHS Pension. Calling the wrong one usually just means being redirected, so check which applies to you first.
I'm calling from outside the UK — is there a different number? +
Yes. For members, use +44 191 283 8918. For pensioners, use +44 191 283 0303. Both replace the UK 0300/0345 numbers, which may not be reachable or may be charged differently from abroad.
Can I email NHS Pensions directly? +
There's a general member query address, nhsbsa.pensionsmember@nhsbsa.nhs.uk, and a separate address used only for formal complaint forms, pensionscomplaints@nhsbsa.nhs.uk. Using the complaints address for a general question won't get a response — use the right one for what you actually need.
Can I just message NHS Pensions on Facebook or X about my specific case? +
No — NHS Pensions is explicit that social media is for general help only, and you shouldn't share personal details there. For anything involving your own record, use the phone, the online contact form, or post.
How long will it take to get a response if I write in? +
It depends what you're asking. A general query handled by the member helpline is often resolved on the call. A written complaint that needs the Complaints and Disputes team gets an early resolution attempt, and a formal Internal Dispute Resolution Stage 1 review aims to respond within two months. A written pension Estimate request currently takes up to 40 working days. None of these are instant, so if your query is time-sensitive, say so clearly and consider phoning rather than only writing in.
