Short answer

Under Section 2 of the NHS Terms and Conditions of Service Handbook, Agenda for Change staff get a 30% enhancement on their normal hourly rate for hours worked between 8pm and 6am on a weekday night (Monday night through Friday night); if more than half of a continuous weekday shift falls in that window, the whole shift qualifies. Weekend nights work differently: Saturday hours are paid at 30% all day, and Sunday hours at 60% all day. The 30% and 60% rates are for Bands 4 to 9; Bands 1 to 3 get higher rates (Band 1: 47% and 94%, Band 2: 41% and 83%, Band 3: 35% and 69%).

Night shifts are a big part of take-home pay for many nurses, healthcare assistants and paramedics. The headline number is simple, 30%, but how it applies depends on which night of the week you work and where midnight falls. This guide walks through the rate with worked examples so you can check your own payslip. The NHS night shift rate: time plus 30%

The night enhancement is a percentage on top of your normal basic hourly rate for your band and pay point, not a flat amount, so it scales with your salary.

Weekday night enhancement

30%

Every hour worked between 8pm and 6am, Monday night through Friday night.

Sunday nights

60%

Hours falling on a Sunday are paid at the Sunday rate, which takes priority over the night rate.

Worked examples: three common night shifts

A Band 5 nurse on pay point 2 (£34,592 a year, £17.69 an hour) works a 10-hour night shift starting at 9pm. Nine of the ten hours fall between 8pm and 6am, which is more than half, so on a weekday the whole shift qualifies for the 30% rate (Handbook paragraph 2.11). The Friday and Saturday rows use the same method as our unsocial hours guide.

Shift (9pm to 7am)Basic payEnhancementTotal
Mon to Tue (30% for the whole shift)£176.90£53.07£229.97
Fri to Sat (30% throughout)£176.90£53.07£229.97
Sat to Sun (30% then 60%)£176.90£90.22£267.12

The same clock times pay differently depending on the day of the week, which is the main thing to know about night pay.

Weekend nights are different

Saturday and Sunday are paid by day, not by the 8pm to 6am window. Saturday hours attract 30% all day, so a Friday night rolling into Saturday morning is 30% throughout. Sunday hours attract 60% all day, so a Saturday night shift jumps from 30% to 60% at midnight. The categories are never added together: each hour gets whichever single rate applies.

Example: a long night shift across several days

Take the same nurse on a 12-hour shift from Sunday 8pm to Monday 8am. Splitting it by calendar day:

HoursRateBasicEnhancement
Sun 8pm to midnight (4 hrs)60% (Sunday)£70.76£42.46
Mon midnight to 6am (6 hrs)30% (weekday night)£106.14£31.84
Mon 6am to 8am (2 hrs)None (daytime)£35.38£0.00
Total (12 hrs)£212.28£74.30

That is £286.58 for the shift if the last two hours are paid as plain daytime hours. Paragraph 2.11 of the Handbook says the whole of a weekday night shift qualifies when more than half of it falls between 8pm and 6am, so some trusts will pay those two hours at 30% as well (another £10.61). Check how your trust applies the rule to a shift that starts on a Sunday.

Who gets night shift enhancements?

Section 2 applies to staff employed in NHS organisations in England on the Agenda for Change terms and conditions (Handbook paragraph 2.2), and its rates table covers Bands 1 to 9. Doctors and dentists are on a separate contract. If you work a lot of nights, the extra can add up to thousands of pounds a year; it is also pensionable. For the working time limits that apply to night workers, see our guide to the NHS Working Time Regulations. For bank holiday nights, see bank holiday pay.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra do you get paid for night shifts in the NHS? +
Agenda for Change staff in Bands 4 to 9 get a 30% enhancement on their normal hourly rate for hours worked between 8pm and 6am on a weekday night (Bands 1, 2 and 3 get 47%, 41% and 35%). On a Band 5 hourly rate of £17.69 (point 2, 2026/27), that is roughly £5.31 extra per night hour, about £23.00 an hour in total.
What hours count as night hours for NHS pay? +
Under the national Section 2 rules, the night enhancement applies to hours worked between 8pm and 6am, Monday night through Friday night. Hours on a Saturday and on a Sunday or bank holiday are paid under their own all-day rates instead.
Is a Saturday night paid more than a weekday night? +
A Saturday night up to midnight is paid at 30%, the same as a weekday night. But from midnight the hours fall on a Sunday, which is paid at 60%, so a Saturday night shift that runs into Sunday morning is worth noticeably more than a Friday night shift.
Do I get night pay for the whole shift or just the night hours? +
It depends on the shift. Under paragraph 2.11 of the NHS Terms and Conditions Handbook (England), where a continuous night shift on a weekday that is not a public holiday runs outside 8pm to 6am, the whole shift qualifies for the night enhancement if more than half of it falls between 8pm and 6am. So a weekday 8pm to 8am shift (10 of 12 hours inside the window) is enhanced for all 12 hours, while a shift with half or less of its hours in the window is enhanced only for the hours that fall inside it. Saturday and Sunday hours are paid by the day instead.
Is there a limit on how many nights I can work? +
The Working Time Regulations give night workers extra protections, including an average limit of 8 hours in any 24. They are averages over a reference period rather than a hard cap on a single shift. See our working time guide for how this works and what counts as a night worker.
Does night shift pay count towards my NHS pension? +
Yes. Unsocial hours enhancements are pensionable pay, so night enhancement counts towards your NHS Pension. See our unsocial hours guide for the detail.
