NHS Pension Payment Dates 2026/27: When You Get Paid

This page is for people who already draw an NHS pension, or are about to, and want to know exactly when the money lands in their account this year. The answer is that NHS Pensions does not run one pay day for everyone, so there is no single calendar to print. What we can give you is the rule NHSBSA publishes, every date in 2026/27 that weekends and bank holidays move, and a finder that does the sum for your own payment day.

Short answer

NHS Pensions pays your pension monthly, in arrears, on the same day each month. That day is set when your award is processed and is on your award letter; it is not necessarily the last day of the month. If your day falls on a weekend or an England and Wales bank holiday, the money goes into your account on the last working day before. In 2026/27 the dates that move are listed month by month below, and the finder shows your own twelve payments.

How NHS Pensions sets your payment date

Three NHSBSA sources say the same thing: its knowledge base article on when your pension will be paid, the NHS Pensions Retirement Guide, and the Survivors guide. Your pension is paid monthly in arrears, one twelfth of the yearly rate to the nearest penny, on the same date each month. NHS Pensions tells you the date once your award is processed. It may not be the last day of the month, and it stays the same date each month.

"In arrears" matters. A pension month is the period between one payment date and the next, and each payment pays for the month just ended. NHSBSA says the number of days in a pension month varies, as in a calendar month, and that this decides the amount of any part-month payment. For most people with a settled pension the amount is the same every month, so you rarely notice.

  • ✓ Where the date comes from: your award letter, sent when your award is processed
  • ✓ What NHS Pensions writes to you about: when your pension begins, and each time your tax code or your yearly rate changes, for example because of the April increase. You do not get a statement every month
  • ✓ Where it is paid: only into a bank or building society account in your own name or a joint account, unless a valid power of attorney or Court of Protection order applies
  • ✓ Weekly payments: only if you were on a weekly wage when you retired, and not for Pension Credit members

NHS pension payment dates for every month of 2026/27

This is the table to use if you want to see the whole year at once. For each month it lists the England and Wales bank holidays and the payment days that move earlier, with the working day the money arrives. A payment day that is not listed is paid on the day itself. Everything here is calculated from NHSBSA's rule, not from a published NHS Pensions calendar, because NHSBSA does not publish one.

Payment days from 29 to 31 are included only where the month has that day. NHSBSA does not say what happens in a shorter month, so if your day is 29, 30 or 31 check your award letter or ask NHS Pensions.

ℹWhy the Easter and Christmas runs are so long

Because the money goes on the last working day before, a run of non-working days all pays out on the same earlier day. In April 2026 Good Friday, the weekend and Easter Monday mean that payment days 3, 4, 5 and 6 are all paid on Thursday 2 April. At Christmas 2026 it is days 25, 26, 27 and 28, paid on Thursday 24 December. If your day is in one of those runs, plan your bills around the earlier date.

Bank holidays in 2026/27 that affect NHS pension payments

These are the England and Wales bank holidays inside the tax year, from the gov.uk bank holidays list, which we read on 19 October 2026. NHSBSA's rule names English and Welsh public holidays only.

  • Friday 3 April 2026: Good Friday
  • Monday 6 April 2026: Easter Monday
  • Monday 4 May 2026: Early May bank holiday
  • Monday 25 May 2026: Spring bank holiday
  • Monday 31 August 2026: Summer bank holiday
  • Friday 25 December 2026: Christmas Day
  • Monday 28 December 2026: Boxing Day (substitute day)
  • Friday 1 January 2027: New Year's Day
  • Friday 26 March 2027: Good Friday
  • Monday 29 March 2027: Easter Monday

Boxing Day falls on a Saturday in 2026, so the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December. That is why the December run above ends on the 28th. Scottish and Northern Irish public holidays, such as 2 January in Scotland or 17 March in Northern Ireland, are not mentioned in NHSBSA's published rule, so we do not treat them as moving a payment.

Your first NHS pension payment

If you have just retired, the first payment is where most of the questions come from. NHSBSA's knowledge base says the following about timing:

  • ✓ Contact your employer about six months before you retire to say that you want to claim, and the employer sends the claim forms to NHS Pensions no more than three months before the retirement date
  • ✓ NHS Pensions aims to pay your first pension payment within 30 calendar days of the date you retire or the date it has everything it needs to process the payment
  • ✓ Once your award is complete it can take a further three to five working days to reach your bank account
  • ✓ If your pension starts partway through a pension month, the first payment is for the days in that part month only, so it is smaller than the ones that follow
  • ✓ Any arrears are payable from your chosen retirement date, and your lump sum is due on the payable date of your pension benefits although processing times can vary
  • ✓ If NHS Pensions pays more than a month late, it pays interest on the late payment under the scheme regulations, calculated from Bank of England base rates, and writes to confirm the dates

The first payment is also often the one taxed wrongly, because NHS Pensions deducts tax under a temporary code until HMRC sends the right one. If that happened to you, read why you were taxed wrongly on your first NHS pension payments before you ring anyone. NHSBSA publishes current processing times for awards on its own website, which is the place to check them.

The April increase and your payment

Pensions are paid in arrears, so the April increase appears in a way that surprises people. NHSBSA's 2026 pensioner newsletter says the increase starts on the first Monday after 5 April, which in 2026 was 6 April, and that your first payment on or after that date includes the increase only from that date. NHSBSA's pensions increase FAQ gives a worked example: if a payment due on 30 April covers a month that began before the increase, the days up to the increase date are at the old rate and the days after it are at the new rate. So your April and May payments can look different from the ones after, and your advice of payment shows the new yearly rate. The 2026 increase was 3.8%.

For April 2027, the rule gives the first Monday after 5 April 2027. Because 5 April 2027 is itself a Monday, that is Monday 12 April 2027. September CPI was 3.5%, but the Government has not yet confirmed the April 2027 increase. Our NHS pension increase page follows the figure as it develops, and the increase by pension amount table shows what each rate adds to a pension from £5,000 to £40,000.

If a payment looks late or the date has changed

Work through these checks in order before you pick up the phone.

  • ✓ Find your award letter and read the payment day. If you cannot find it, My NHS Pension lets pensioner members view their payslips and P60s, and our My NHS Pension guide explains the sign-in
  • ✓ Look the day up in the table above. A weekend or bank holiday means the money should arrive earlier, not later
  • ✓ Check that your bank details on record are still right. NHSBSA says that if you have changed accounts without telling it, payments can go to a closed account. If you switched through the Current Account Switch Service you do not need to tell it, because it will already know
  • ✓ Check your address and any change of name are recorded. NHSBSA says failing to keep in contact can lead to your pension being suspended
  • ✓ Then contact NHS Pensions. The numbers, hours and postal address are on our how to contact NHS Pensions page, and the pensioner line is the one to use

If you are the family of someone who has died, payment stops with the death and a payment made after it is an overpayment: see what to do when an NHS pensioner dies.

Frequently asked questions

What date is the NHS pension paid? +
There is no single date for everyone. NHSBSA says your pension is paid monthly, on the same date each month, and that it tells you your payment date when your award is processed, so it is on your award letter. NHSBSA adds that the date may not be the last day of the month.
What happens if my NHS pension payment date is a bank holiday or weekend? +
NHSBSA says that when the payment date falls on a weekend or an English or Welsh public holiday, the payment goes into your account on the last working day before. So a date on a Saturday or Sunday is paid on the Friday, and a date on a Monday bank holiday is paid on the Friday before it. Where Good Friday and Easter Monday sit either side of a weekend, the money arrives on the Thursday.
Is my NHS pension paid in advance or in arrears? +
In arrears. NHSBSA says the pension is paid monthly in arrears, one twelfth of the yearly rate to the nearest penny. A pension month runs from one payment date to the next, and if your pension starts partway through one, your first payment covers only the days in that part month.
When is my first NHS pension payment? +
NHSBSA says it aims to pay your first pension payment within 30 calendar days of the date you retire or the date it receives all the information it needs, whichever is later. Once an award is complete it can take a further three to five working days to reach your bank. If it is paid more than a month late, NHS Pensions pays interest on the late payment.
Are NHS pension payment dates different in Scotland or Northern Ireland? +
NHSBSA runs the scheme for England and Wales and its published rule names English and Welsh public holidays only. It does not say that Scottish or Northern Irish bank holidays move a payment, so we have not assumed that they do. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own schemes and administrators. If you are paid by one of them, check the date on your award letter.
Can I change the day of the month my NHS pension is paid? +
We could not find any NHSBSA page that offers a choice of payment date, so we do not say that you can. The date is set when your award is processed and given to you in writing. If it causes you a real problem, for example with direct debits, ask NHS Pensions on the pensioner line listed on our contact page.
Can the NHS pension be paid weekly? +
NHSBSA's knowledge base says the pension is paid monthly and cannot be paid in a lump sum each year. Weekly payments are available only if you receive a weekly wage from your employer when you retire, and the rule applies to people living in the UK and excludes Pension Credit members. A covering letter goes with the application.
Is the State Pension paid on the same day as my NHS pension? +
No. The State Pension is paid by the Department for Work and Pensions on its own schedule, and gov.uk quotes it in four-weekly amounts. Your NHS pension is a separate payment on the monthly date in your award letter. Our pensioner net income calculator shows how the two combine after tax.
