NHS Scotland Band 8a Pay 2026/27: £65,125 to £70,303
Independent guidance — not affiliated with NHS England or DHSC
This page is for senior managers, consultant-level practitioners and specialists on, or applying for, Band 8a in NHS Scotland. It gives the two 2026/27 pay points from Scottish Government circular PCS(AFC)2026/1, explains the unusually long wait on the first point, shows what a Scottish taxpayer keeps on a salary that sits entirely in the 42% tax band, and sets the band beside England's three-point 8a. FrontlinePay is independent of NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government.
Short answer
NHS Scotland Band 8a pays £65,125 at point 1 up to £70,303 at point 2 for a full-time 36-hour week in 2026/27 (circular PCS(AFC)2026/1). That is £34.69 to £37.45 an hour. You reach the top point after 5 years in the band, and a Scottish taxpayer on point 1 takes home about £3,508 a month after tax, National Insurance and the NHS Pension Scheme (Scotland). Band 8a has only two points, you stay on the first for five years, and the second point is £5,178 higher.
NHS Scotland Band 8a
£65,125-£70,303
2026/27, full-time 36-hour week, from the Scottish Government pay circular.
England Band 8a (for comparison)
£57,528-£64,750
Scotland is £7,597 higher at the bottom and £5,553 higher at the top, on a shorter week.
ℹOvertime for Band 8 and 9 staff depends on the board
Since 2023 Scottish Agenda for Change staff in Bands 8 and 9 can be paid overtime, applied according to each board's own arrangements (circular PCS(AFC)2023/1). In England, Bands 8 and 9 are not entitled to overtime payments. Ask your HR department how your board applies it. See the hours section below.
Which jobs are Band 8a in NHS Scotland
Band 8a is the entry band for senior and consultant-level roles: the job weight range is 540 to 584 under the NHS Job Evaluation Scheme (Scottish Handbook Section 1, Table 1), and Band 8 is split into four ranges, 8a to 8d. The band belongs to the job, not the title (Handbook 1.2 to 1.4), so two similarly named senior posts can sit on different bands.
The nationally evaluated posts that NHS Scotland publishes at Band 8a are:
- Rehabilitation Co-ordinator
- Regional Neonatal Transport Co-ordinator
- Physician Assistant at the higher level (the entry-level post is Band 7)
- Family Nurse Practitioner Supervisor
NHS Careers gives these UK-wide Band 8a examples: consultant prosthetist/orthotist, dental laboratory manager, project and programme management posts, modern matron and nurse consultant in mental health nursing. The England page, NHS Band 8a salary 2026/27, covers the English scale and what the band means south of the border.
Senior posts above this level can fall outside Agenda for Change altogether. The Scottish Handbook applies to all directly employed staff except doctors and dentists and the Executive and Senior Manager cohorts, so check which terms your contract is on if you move into a very senior post.
Band 8a pay points in NHS Scotland, 2026/27
| Pay point | Annual | Monthly (gross) | Hourly (36-hour week) | Overtime hour (time and a half) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 | £65,125 | £5,427.08 | £34.69 | £52.04 |
| Point 2 | £70,303 | £5,858.58 | £37.45 | £56.18 |
Source: Scottish Government NHS Circular PCS(AFC)2026/1 (23 January 2026), Annex B. Monthly figures are one twelfth of the annual salary. Hourly rates are annual pay divided by 52.143 weeks and 36 hours, rounded to the penny, and match the hourly column in the circular.
Band 8a has two points in Scotland: £65,125 and £70,303. The step between them is £5,178 (8.0%), and Scottish point 1 is already £375 above the top of the England 8a scale (£64,750). For comparison with the band above, Band 8b point 1 is £76,888, which is £6,585 above the Band 8a top.
The Scottish advanced rate of 45% applies to income above £75,000. After the pension deduction a member on the top point has £62,148 of taxable pay, so base pay on Band 8a does not reach it.
Band 8a year-by-year pay journey
Scotland does not move you up a point every year. The Scottish Agenda for Change Handbook (Section 1, Table 1a) sets how long you stay on each point, and the 2026/27 pay journey in the circular shows it year by year. Progression is on your incremental date, which is the anniversary of the day you started in the post (Handbook 1.15).
| Year in band | Pay point | Annual salary | Change on previous year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Point 1 | £65,125 | Starting salary |
| Year 2 | Point 1 | £65,125 | No step this year |
| Year 3 | Point 1 | £65,125 | No step this year |
| Year 4 | Point 1 | £65,125 | No step this year |
| Year 5 | Point 1 | £65,125 | No step this year |
| Year 6 | Point 2 | £70,303 | +£5,178 a year |
These are the 2026/27 rates. Every pay point rises with each pay award, so a year-3 salary in a later year will be higher than the figure shown here. Time on each point: point 1 for 5 years; point 2 for 1 year.
Band 8a has the most back-loaded journey of the bands covered in this series. Scottish staff stay on point 1 for five years and move to point 2 in year 6, so you reach the top after five full years. England has three points with steps at two and five years (NHS Careers), so an English 8a is paid £60,417 from year 3 and £64,750 from year 6.
Counting what you are actually paid, six years in an 8a post earns £395,928 in Scotland on 2026/27 rates against £361,057 on the England scale, a gross difference of £34,871. Across the first five years only (all on point 1 in Scotland), the difference is £29,318. Scottish point 1 is higher than England's top point, so you are ahead from the first day, but the Scottish scale has no mid-band raise.
Joining from the NHS elsewhere in the UK, the Handbook (1.10) places you on the pay point you would have reached had all your service been in NHS Scotland. An English Band 8a with five or more years in the band would therefore be expected to join on point 2 (£70,303) rather than the starting point. Promotion from Band 7 is handled by 1.12 and 1.13, and from the top of Band 7 (£61,466) the basic gain to point 1 is £3,659 a year. The incremental date is the anniversary of the date you took up the post (1.15), and progression is automatic in all but exceptional circumstances (6.16).
Band 8a take-home pay for a Scottish taxpayer
This table uses Scottish Income Tax rates for 2026/27, Class 1 National Insurance and the NHS Pension Scheme (Scotland) member contribution rate for each salary, for a full-time member who pays no student loan and has no other income. The standard tax-free Personal Allowance of £12,570 applies.
| Pay point | Gross | Pension (rate) | Income tax | National Insurance | Net a year | Net a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 | £65,125 | £7,555 (11.6%) | £12,162 | £3,313 | £42,096 | £3,508 |
| Point 2 | £70,303 | £8,155 (11.6%) | £14,084 | £3,417 | £44,647 | £3,721 |
Pension contributions come off before income tax (the net pay arrangement) but not before National Insurance. The pension rate is the Scottish scheme tier for that salary from circular 2026/03 of the Scottish Public Pensions Agency (see NHS Scotland pension differences), which can differ from the England tier for the same pay. Continuing members are placed using last year's pay, but because the tier edges line up with the pay points, each point lands in the same tier on either table.
Every pound of Band 8a pay above £43,662 is taxed at 42% in Scotland, and 8a pay is about £13,909 to £18,486 above that line after the pension deduction. A Scottish taxpayer pays £1,701 to £1,793 a year more income tax than an rUK taxpayer on the same salary and pension, the highest Scottish tax premium of any band covered in this series.
That is why the take-home gap with England is much smaller than the pay gap. At the bottom of the band Scottish pay is £7,597 higher but take-home is only £155 a month higher; at the top of the scale it is £5,553 higher but £58 a month higher after tax. The Scottish pension rate is 11.6% at both points, against 10.7% on the England scale.
On the second point the marginal rate for a Scottish taxpayer is 42% income tax plus 2% National Insurance, so 44p in every extra pound goes in tax and NI. An England 8a on the top point pays 40% plus 2%, which is 42p. Only extra income, such as a second job or private work, would take a Band 8a salary into the 45% advanced rate that starts at £75,000.
Band 8a hourly rates, unsocial hours and overtime
An hour at Band 8a on the 36-hour week is £34.69 at point 1 and £37.45 at point 2 (the Scottish Government's own table gives the same figures). Unsocial hours rates for Band 8a are the Bands 4 to 9 rates: time plus 30% for Saturdays and weekday hours between 8pm and 6am, time plus 60% for Sundays and public holidays. A Sunday hour at point 1 is £55.50. Enhancements are paid on basic pay plus any long-term recruitment and retention premium only (Handbook 2.5).
Overtime is the real Scotland-England difference in this band. The England Handbook says staff in Bands 8 and 9 are not entitled to overtime payments. In Scotland, circular PCS(AFC)2023/1 (9 February 2023) made permanent a variation brought in at the start of the pandemic: staff in all of bands 1 to 9 are now eligible for overtime, with overtime for Bands 8 and 9 paid in line with local board arrangements. At the standard time-and-a-half rate an overtime hour at point 1 is £52.04 and at double time on a general public holiday it is £69.38. Whether and how it is paid for senior staff differs between boards, so ask for the local policy in writing.
Time off in lieu is the alternative (Handbook 3.5 and 3.6): you can ask for it at plain time, and if the service cannot give you the time off within three months the overtime rate must be paid. The full-time week is 36 hours for Agenda for Change staff, but the Scottish Government has said Executive and Senior Manager staff, who are on separate terms, are treated on a 37.5-hour basis for public holiday calculations (circular PCS(PHG)2026/1), so check which group your post belongs to. See NHS Scotland 36-hour week explained.
| Pay point | Plain time | Night or Saturday (+30%) | Sunday or public holiday (+60%) | Overtime (x1.5) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 | £34.69 | £45.10 | £55.50 | £52.04 |
| Point 2 | £37.45 | £48.69 | £59.92 | £56.18 |
Hourly figures per hour worked, before tax. Unsocial hours percentages are from Table 2 of Section 2 of the Scottish Handbook: night means weekday hours after 8pm and before 6am. Overtime is time and a half under Section 3, and double time on general public holidays (£69.38 an hour at point 1). Overtime starts after 36 hours a week for a full-timer; see the 36-hour week explained.
Band 8a in Scotland compared with England
| Scotland point | Scotland (36-hour week) | England equivalent (37.5-hour week) | Scotland ahead by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 | £65,125 | £57,528 (under 2 years) | +£7,597 (13.2%) |
| Point 2 | £70,303 | £64,750 (5+ years) | +£5,553 (8.6%) |
England figures are the 2026/27 NHS Employers Agenda for Change rates, with the years-of-service steps NHS Careers shows. Compared like for like, the hourly rate at the bottom of the band is £34.69 in Scotland and £29.42 in England (17.9% higher in Scotland). After tax, National Insurance and each country's pension rate, entry-point take-home is £3,508 a month in Scotland against £3,353 in England.
England has three Band 8a points (£57,528, £60,417 and £64,750) and Scotland has two. Scottish point 1 is £7,597 (13.2%) above the England starting point, and Scottish point 2 is £5,553 (8.6%) above the England top. By hour worked, £34.69 against £29.42 at the bottom is a 17.9% difference, the largest hourly gap of any band in this series, helped by the 36-hour week.
The takeaway after tax is smaller: Scottish take-home is £155 a month higher at the bottom of the band and £58 higher at the top. Staff in inner London on the England scale add a High Cost Area Supplement of 20% (limited to £8,746 at this band), so an inner London 8a on the top England point earns more in cash than a Scottish 8a on the same band. The cross-band comparison is in NHS Scotland vs England pay compared.
From Band 8a to Band 8b
Band 8b in Scotland starts at £76,888 and ends at £82,251, with the same two-point, six-year shape as 8a. Moving from the top of 8a (£70,303) to the start of 8b adds £6,585 a year gross, about £270 a month net. From the bottom of 8a to the bottom of 8b is £11,763 gross. Under Handbook 1.12, if your working pattern is substantially unchanged on promotion you move to the first point on the new band that gives an increase once basic pay, any long-term premium and your unsocial hours payment are combined.
The Scottish Agenda for Change scale continues to 8b, 8c, 8d and Band 9, each with two points and the same journey shape (five years, then the second point). The full table is on NHS Scotland pay scales 2026/27.
Pension and annual pay at Band 8a
Scottish pension contributions are 11.6% of pensionable pay at both Band 8a points, which is £7,555 at point 1 and £8,155 at point 2, against £6,156 to £6,928 (10.7%) on the England scale. The Scottish scheme is run by the Scottish Public Pensions Agency and has its own nine tiers; the differences are covered in NHS Scotland pension: key differences and the tiers themselves in NHS pension contribution rates 2026/27.
The 8a pay level is also where people begin to look at pension tax charges. Our NHS pension tax calculator and annual allowance calculator test whether your own pay, pension growth and any other income are likely to cause a charge.

Where these figures come from
FrontlinePay is independent and not part of NHS Scotland or the Scottish Government. Pay points are taken from the published Scottish circular, take-home pay is calculated with the same Income Tax and National Insurance engine as our NHS Pay Calculator, and the Scottish pension tiers are applied to each salary. Last checked October 2026. The 2026/27 rates are subject to the Scottish CPI inflation guarantee, so a further top-up is possible in early 2027; we will update this page if one is confirmed.
