NHS Band 8a Take-Home Pay 2026/27 After Tax and Pension
Independent guidance — not affiliated with NHS England or DHSC
Band 8a is where matrons, consultant nurses, consultant allied health professionals, senior managers and lead specialists sit. In England it runs from £57,528 to £64,750 across three points, and a full-time employee takes home about £3,353 a month at point 1, £3,477 at point 2 and £3,663 at the top, after income tax, National Insurance and the NHS Pension.
Band 8a is where higher-rate tax becomes part of every payslip in England. After the pension, taxable pay is £51,373 at point 1, which is £1,103 over the £50,270 line, so you pay 40% on that slice from the first point. Point 2 follows after two years in the band and the top point three years after that (Handbook, Annex 2). The pay points themselves are on the Band 8a salary page.
Short answer
A full-time matron, consultant nurse or service lead on Band 8a, point 1, in England takes home about £3,353 a month (£774 a week) from £57,528 a year, after income tax, National Insurance and the NHS Pension, with no student loan. At the top point (£64,750) it is £3,663 a month. In Scotland, where pay, tax bands and pension tiers all differ, the figures run from £3,508 to £3,721 a month. From point 1 a pound of extra pay leaves you about 52p in England, and Inner London's supplement can push point 2 into the top 12.5% pension tier.

This page answers "what lands in my bank account", not "what is the salary". For the pay points themselves, hourly rates and who works at this band, see the Band 8a salary page. Every figure here is for a full-time employee on a standard tax code with no other income, using the 2026/27 tax year, and is explained in how we calculated this. Band 8a take-home pay in England, 2026/27
England's table applies to Agenda for Change staff paid on the England pay scale. The pension tier is the one the NHS Pension Scheme in England and Wales applies to your basic pay. All figures are a year unless marked.
| Pay point | Gross a year | NHS Pension | Income tax | National Insurance | Take-home a year | A month | A week |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 (entry) | £57,528 | £6,156 (10.7%) | £7,981 | £3,161 | £40,230 | £3,353 | £774 |
| Point 2 | £60,417 | £6,465 (10.7%) | £9,013 | £3,219 | £41,720 | £3,477 | £802 |
| Point 3 (top) | £64,750 | £6,928 (10.7%) | £10,561 | £3,306 | £43,955 | £3,663 | £845 |
Income tax is worked out after the pension has come off (the pension comes out of pay before tax, but not before National Insurance). The monthly figure is the annual figure divided by 12 and the weekly figure divides by 52, so a real payslip will differ by small amounts depending on pay dates, 4-week and 5-week months and your tax code.
Band 8a take-home with a student loan
A student loan repayment is 9% of your pay above the plan's threshold (£26,900 for Plan 1, £29,385 for Plan 2, £25,000 for Plan 5 and £33,795 for Plan 4 in 2026/27), taken through payroll in addition to the deductions above. The table shows monthly take-home after the loan, with the monthly repayment in brackets. Postgraduate loans are separate (6% above £21,000) and are not shown.
| Pay point (England) | No loan | Plan 1 | Plan 2 | Plan 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 (entry) (£57,528) | £3,353 | £3,123 (repay £230) | £3,141 (repay £211) | £3,109 (repay £244) |
| Point 2 (£60,417) | £3,477 | £3,225 (repay £251) | £3,244 (repay £233) | £3,211 (repay £266) |
| Point 3 (top) (£64,750) | £3,663 | £3,379 (repay £284) | £3,398 (repay £265) | £3,365 (repay £298) |
Which plan you are on depends on where and when you started your course, not on where you work now. Gov.uk puts English undergraduates who started on or after 1 August 2023 on Plan 5, English students from 1 September 2012 to 31 July 2023 and Welsh students from 1 September 2012 on Plan 2, anyone from Northern Ireland on Plan 1 (as are English and Welsh students from before September 2012), and Scottish students on Plan 4. Your student loan statement or payslip shows your plan; the gov.uk plan checker is the official source.
Band 8a take-home pay in Wales
Wales has its own 2026/27 pay scale, taxed at the same rates as England, with the same NHS Pension tiers. Welsh figures are monthly take-home after tax, National Insurance and pension.
| Pay point (Wales) | Gross a year | NHS Pension | A month, no loan | A month, Plan 1 | A month, Plan 2 | A month, Plan 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 (entry) | £58,379 | 10.7% | £3,389 | £3,153 | £3,172 | £3,139 |
| Point 2 | £61,317 | 10.7% | £3,515 | £3,257 | £3,276 | £3,243 |
| Point 3 (top) | £65,723 | 10.7% | £3,705 | £3,414 | £3,432 | £3,399 |
Wales does not pay the High Cost Area Supplement, which is an England-only payment. Northern Ireland has its own pay scale and its own pension tiers, so it is not covered by these tables: see NHS Northern Ireland pay 2026/27.
Band 8a take-home pay in Scotland
Scotland is different in three ways at once, and this table uses all three: its own pay scale, Scottish income tax rates (19%, 20%, 21%, 42%), and the nine-tier NHS Pension Scheme (Scotland). It also pays on a 36-hour full-time week from 1 April 2026, which raises the hourly rate but not the annual salary.
| Pay point (Scotland) | Gross a year | NHS Pension | Income tax | National Insurance | A month, no loan | A month, Plan 1 | A month, Plan 2 | A month, Plan 4 | A month, Plan 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 (entry) | £65,125 | £7,555 (11.6%) | £12,162 | £3,313 | £3,508 | £3,221 | £3,240 | £3,273 | £3,207 |
| Point 2 (top) | £70,303 | £8,155 (11.6%) | £14,084 | £3,417 | £3,721 | £3,395 | £3,414 | £3,447 | £3,381 |
Scotland's Band 8a has two points, £65,125 and £70,303, with the second reached only in year 6 of the band (Scotland Section 1, Table 1a), five years after starting at point 1. At point 1 taxable pay after the 11.6% pension is £57,571, of which £13,909 is above £43,662 and is taxed at 42%. At the same taxable pay the England and Wales rates would charge £1,701 less than Scotland's £12,162.
Scotland's gross pay is £633 a month above England's at point 1, but take-home is £155 higher, because the 42% rate and the 11.6% pension apply to the extra. At point 2, £3,721 a month is £432 gross more than point 1 and £213 net more. Plan 4 repays £2,819.70 to £3,285.72 a year.
Scotland's two pension tables (one for members already in the scheme last year, one for new starters and anyone whose pay changes) give the same rate at every Band 8a point, so the table above holds whichever applies to you.
Your NHS Pension tier at Band 8a
All three England points (£57,528, £60,417 and £64,750) are in the 10.7% tier, which covers pensionable pay from £52,779 to £67,668. Wales' points (£58,379, £61,317 and £65,723) are in the same tier. The top tier, 12.5%, starts at £67,669, and the top England point is £2,919 below it.
That makes the High Cost Area Supplement matter for your tier. Inner London at point 2 takes pay to £69,163, over £67,668, so the whole of your pay is charged at 12.5%, not 10.7%: that tier change alone costs £1,245 a year. Scotland's tiers are different, and both Band 8a points are at 11.6%.
- England and Wales, on basic pay: point 1: 10.7%; point 2: 10.7%; point 3: 10.7%.
- Scotland: point 1: 11.6%; point 2: 11.6%.
Your whole pensionable pay is charged at the rate for the tier it falls in, not just the part above the line. The tier is set by your actual annual pensionable pay, not by the full-time equivalent, which matters for part-timers: see the NHS pro-rata salary calculator. Pensionable pay includes unsocial hours payments and the High Cost Area Supplement, so either can move you up a tier.
The tiers (England and Wales, then Scotland)
England and Wales, from 1 April 2026
- £0 to £13,259: 5.2%
- £13,260 to £28,854: 6.5%
- £28,855 to £35,155: 8.3%
- £35,156 to £52,778: 9.8%
- £52,779 to £67,668: 10.7%
- Above £67,668: 12.5%
Scotland, new starters and changed pay (2026/27 bands)
- £0 to £13,330: 5.7%
- £13,331 to £28,987: 6.4%
- £28,988 to £34,302: 7.0%
- £34,303 to £43,038: 8.7%
- £43,039 to £45,134: 9.8%
- £45,135 to £54,862: 10.5%
- £54,863 to £59,369: 11.2%
- £59,370 to £83,026: 11.6%
- Above £83,026: 12.7%
Tax, National Insurance and student loans at this pay
All three England points are over the higher-rate line after pension. Taxable pay is £51,373, £53,952 and £57,822, so £1,103, £3,682 and £7,552 are taxed at 40%. Income tax is £7,981 at point 1 and £10,561 at the top. National Insurance is only £3,161 to £3,306 because it falls to 2% above £50,270.
An extra pound of pay leaves 52p at any England point in the band: 10.7p goes to the pension, about 35.7p to 40% income tax on what is left, and 2p to National Insurance. On Plan 2 the figure is 43p. Plan 2 repayments are £211 a month at point 1 and £265 at the top; Plan 5 £244 to £298; Plan 1 £230 to £284.
The pay steps keep about half after deductions. Point 1 to point 2 adds £241 a month gross and £124 net, which is 51.6%. Point 2 to the top adds £361 gross and £186 net.
Band 8a in London: HCAS and what it does to take-home
The High Cost Area Supplement is a percentage of basic pay with a minimum and a maximum payment, paid in England only: Inner London 20% (minimum £5,794, maximum £8,746), Outer London 15% (£4,870 to £6,137) and the Fringe 5% (£1,346 to £2,270). It is pensionable, so it is added to your pay before the pension tier is read. The table shows each zone at each point, with the take-home gain compared with the same point outside London (no student loan).
| Pay point | Zone | HCAS a year | How it is set | Gross a year | Pension | Take-home a month | Gain a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 (entry) basic £57,528, £3,353 a month | Inner London | £8,746 | maximum payment (£8,746) | £66,274 | 10.7% | £3,728 | +£376 of £729 gross |
| Outer London | £6,137 | maximum payment (£6,137) | £63,665 | 10.7% | £3,616 | +£264 of £511 gross | |
| Fringe | £2,270 | maximum payment (£2,270) | £59,798 | 10.7% | £3,450 | +£98 of £189 gross | |
| Point 2 basic £60,417, £3,477 a month | Inner London | £8,746 | maximum payment (£8,746) | £69,163 | 12.5% (higher tier) | £3,790 | +£314 of £729 gross |
| Outer London | £6,137 | maximum payment (£6,137) | £66,554 | 10.7% | £3,741 | +£264 of £511 gross | |
| Fringe | £2,270 | maximum payment (£2,270) | £62,687 | 10.7% | £3,574 | +£98 of £189 gross | |
| Point 3 (top) basic £64,750, £3,663 a month | Inner London | £8,746 | maximum payment (£8,746) | £73,496 | 12.5% (higher tier) | £3,973 | +£310 of £729 gross |
| Outer London | £6,137 | maximum payment (£6,137) | £70,887 | 12.5% (higher tier) | £3,863 | +£200 of £511 gross | |
| Fringe | £2,270 | maximum payment (£2,270) | £67,020 | 10.7% | £3,761 | +£98 of £189 gross |
Band 8a pays every London zone its maximum at every point: £8,746 in Inner London, £6,137 in Outer London and £2,270 in the Fringe. A flat sum on pay that is already taxed at 40% is worth less than at lower bands: Inner London keeps £376 a month of £729 gross at point 1.
The 12.5% tier makes it thinner still. Inner London at points 2 and 3 (£69,163 and £73,496) is over £67,668, so your whole pay is at 12.5%, and Outer London at the top point (£70,887) does the same. At point 2 Inner London keeps £314 a month; Outer London at point 2 (£66,554) stays at 10.7% and keeps £264. After pension, taxable pay for Inner London point 2 is £60,518.
Which zone you are in depends on where the post is based, using the 2005 Primary Care Trust boundaries set out in Annex 8 of the NHS Terms and Conditions Handbook. See London weighting vs HCAS explained and the HCAS zone explainer.
What unsocial hours add at Band 8a
If you work Saturdays, nights (8pm to 6am on weekdays), Sundays or public holidays, you are paid an enhancement on top of the basic hourly rate. The Handbook (Section 2, Table 2) sets Band 8a at time plus 30% for Saturdays and weekday 8pm to 6am, and time plus 60% for Sundays and public holidays in England and Wales. Scotland's Section 2 uses the same percentages for this band. Only one rate applies to each hour, and the enhancement is worked out on basic pay, not HCAS (Section 2, paragraphs 2.8 and 2.12). Unsocial hours payments are pensionable (paragraph 2.14), so they also count toward your pension tier.
| Pay point (England) | Basic hourly rate | Saturday or night, extra an hour | Sunday or bank holiday, extra an hour | One 7.5-hour shift, Saturday or night | One 7.5-hour shift, Sunday or bank holiday |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 (entry) | £29.42 | +£8.83 | +£17.65 | +£66.20 | +£132.39 |
| Point 2 | £30.90 | +£9.27 | +£18.54 | +£69.52 | +£139.04 |
| Point 3 (top) | £33.11 | +£9.93 | +£19.87 | +£74.51 | +£149.01 |
In Scotland the hourly rate is worked out on a 36-hour week, so a standard shift is 7.2 hours: point 1, £34.69 an hour, +£74.94 for a Saturday or night shift and +£149.88 for a Sunday or bank holiday shift; point 2, £37.45 an hour, +£80.90 for a Saturday or night shift and +£161.79 for a Sunday or bank holiday shift.
The Handbook says staff in Bands 8 and 9 are not entitled to overtime payments (Section 3, paragraph 3.6), but unsocial hours payments under Section 2 apply to every band.
If you are an on-call manager or work a rota, enhancements are worked out on basic pay, not HCAS, and are pensionable. Because every pound over £50,270 is taxed at 40% in England (42% in Scotland over £43,662), an extra pound of unsocial hours pay is worth about 52p.
An illustration: on point 1 in England, 1 Saturday or night shifts and 0 Sunday or bank holiday shifts a month (7.5 hours each, all in the enhanced period) add £66 a month before deductions. After tax, National Insurance and pension that is about £34 a month more in your pocket . The same pattern in Scotland (7.2 hours each) adds £75 gross and about £37 net a month. Your own rota will differ: enter it in the unsocial hours calculator. This assumes the same extra every month for a year; real payslips tax each month cumulatively.
Worked example: England, point 2, Inner London, no student loan
A consultant nurse on point 2 of Band 8a in Inner London. The High Cost Area Supplement takes gross pay to £69,163, over £67,668, so the pension is 12.5% rather than 10.7%.
| Step | A year | A month |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pay (point 2) | £60,417 | £5,035 |
| Plus Inner London HCAS | £8,746 | £729 |
| Gross pay | £69,163 | £5,764 |
| NHS Pension (12.5%) | -£8,645 | -£720 |
| Income tax (on £60,518 after pension) | -£11,639 | -£970 |
| National Insurance | -£3,394 | -£283 |
| Take-home pay | £45,485 | £3,790 (£875 a week) |
Opting out of the pension would raise this month's take-home to about £4,223, but you would give up the pension you are building and your employer's contribution; see the pension opt-out calculator before deciding.
How we calculated this
ℹMethod, assumptions and sources
Pay. Pay points are the 2026/27 scales in our data files: England and Wales from the NHS Employers and Welsh Government circulars (AfC(W) 02/2026 and its June correction), Scotland from the Scottish Government circular PCS(AFC)2026/1.
Tax and National Insurance. 2026/27 rates: Personal Allowance £12,570; 20% to £50,270 in England and Wales, with the Scottish bands checked against gov.uk; employee National Insurance of 8% between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above.
Pension. England and Wales tiers from NHSBSA and NHS Employers (rates set on actual annual pensionable pay); Scotland from the Scottish Public Pensions Agency circular 2026/03. We assume contributions come out of pay before tax, as the NHS Pension Scheme does, and that you are in the scheme.
Student loans. 9% above the 2026/27 thresholds on gov.uk, on all gross pay including HCAS and enhancements.
What is left out. Other income, salary sacrifice schemes, Blue Light or other benefits, pay protection, recruitment and retention premia, overtime, on-call pay, the Northern Ireland scales, part-time hours and tax codes other than the standard one. Payroll works month by month, so your payslip can differ by a few pounds. Check anything that matters with your payroll team, union rep or a regulated adviser. This is guidance, not financial advice.
