South West Yorkshire Partnership Teaching NHS FT: Pay & CQC Rating
Independent guidance — not affiliated with NHS England or DHSC
Short answer
South West Yorkshire Partnership Teaching NHS Foundation Trust pays on the same national Agenda for Change bands as any other NHS mental health trust, and — because it sits in West and South Yorkshire, not London or its fringe — no High Cost Area Supplement applies to any post here. The trust gained its "Teaching" title on 17 October 2025 through a formal partnership with the University of Leeds; it remains the same organisation serving Barnsley, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield, and its 90-bed Newton Lodge medium secure forensic unit at Fieldhead in Wakefield takes referrals from across all of Yorkshire and the Humber. Its current overall CQC rating is Good, though a 2023 focused inspection found Requires Improvement at its acute, PICU and forensic wards specifically. Use the NHS Pay Calculator for your exact figure.
A trust with a new name: becoming a Teaching Trust
If you've seen this trust referred to under two slightly different names, that's not an error — it's a genuine, recent change. Until October 2025, the organisation was known as South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. On 17 October 2025, the University of Leeds's Faculty of Medicine and Health formally approved the trust's application to become a Teaching Trust, and the organisation was renamed South West Yorkshire Partnership Teaching NHS Foundation Trust to reflect the new status. This isn't a rebrand of an unrelated organisation or a merger with another trust — it's the same trust, same catchment, same services, with an added formal teaching relationship and (per the trust's own framing) expanded placement opportunities for medical and other clinical students. Anyone applying here should expect to see both names in older documents, job history and external write-ups for some time, and should treat them as referring to the same current employer.
What the trust actually runs today
South West Yorkshire Partnership Teaching NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, community, learning disability and wellbeing services across four districts: Barnsley, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield. It's organised into six business delivery units — one for each of those four districts, plus separate units for its regional forensic services and its wider specialist services. Its main hospital site is Fieldhead Hospital in Wakefield, a long-established psychiatric and learning disability facility that also hosts the trust's forensic unit (covered below); in Barnsley, it also runs services inherited from Kendray Hospital and Mount Vernon Hospital following the 2013 abolition of local Primary Care Trusts, which brought Barnsley into the trust's catchment. Reported figures put the trust's workforce at around 4,235 whole-time-equivalent staff, with an annual budget in the region of £230 million — a genuinely mid-sized specialist trust rather than one of the largest mental health providers in England.
Mental health nursing here follows exactly the same Agenda for Change bands as any other field — see our nursing guide for how progression works from Band 5 through senior practice and leadership roles — and allied health professionals working across the trust's community and learning disability services are covered in our AHP guide.

Newton Lodge and regional forensic services
One of the most genuinely distinctive things about this trust is the scale and regional reach of its forensic mental health services, which extend well beyond its four home districts. Newton Lodge, also known as the Yorkshire Centre for Forensic Psychiatry, is a 90-bed medium secure hospital based on the Fieldhead site in Wakefield, made up of seven separate wards, each geared to a different stage of a patient's treatment and recovery pathway. It provides care for men and women with mental health problems, and men with a learning disability, referred from across the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber — meaning forensic staff here work with a genuinely regional caseload, not simply a local one. The trust's separate Priestley Unit, in Dewsbury, hosts gender-specific older adult inpatient wards, a different specialist population again from the working-age forensic caseload at Newton Lodge.
For anyone building a career in forensic mental health nursing, psychology or occupational therapy, this combination of a substantial, purpose-built regional medium secure unit alongside general adult, older adult and community services in the same trust is a genuine structural advantage over trusts that only run general adult services and refer forensic cases elsewhere.
CQC rating: Good overall, with named concerns
The trust's overall Care Quality Commission rating is Good, from its most recent comprehensive inspection, published on the CQC's provider page for the trust (provider code RXG) on 23 August 2019. Within that comprehensive rating, four of the five key questions — effective, caring, responsive and well-led — were rated Good, while safe was rated Requires Improvement.
CQC overall rating
Good
Most recent comprehensive rating published 23 August 2019 (CQC provider RXG); safe rated Requires Improvement. A 2023 focused inspection of acute, PICU and forensic wards also found Requires Improvement at those specific services.
More recent, narrower CQC activity has raised specific concerns worth knowing honestly rather than glossing over. In May 2023, the CQC inspected the trust's acute wards for adults of working age, psychiatric intensive care units, and forensic inpatient or secure wards specifically, and rated those services Requires Improvement — without changing the trust's overall Good rating, since CQC ratings for individual service lines and the trust-wide rating are published and can move independently. If you're applying for a role on one of these specific ward types, it's worth checking the CQC's most recent report for that named service directly, rather than relying only on the trust-wide Good headline. As with any inspection-based rating, treat this as a snapshot that can and does change at future inspections.
NHS Staff Survey: what we could and couldn't verify
We were unable to independently verify a specific, current official NHS Staff Survey headline result — such as a "would recommend as a place to work" percentage — for this trust from public sources at the time of writing. Older NHS Staff Survey figures exist from previous years, and separate third-party employee review sites report their own recommendation percentages based on self-selected reviewers — but those are a different measure entirely from the NHS Staff Surveys Coordination Centre's official annual benchmark report, and shouldn't be treated as interchangeable with it.
ℹCheck the primary source before relying on any figure here
For a mental health trust specifically, the NHS Staff Surveys Coordination Centre publishes a full benchmark PDF report by provider code (RXG for this trust) at nhsstaffsurveys.com, comparing the trust's People Promise theme scores against its Mental Health & Learning Disability comparator group average. If a current staff survey figure genuinely matters to your decision about a role here, that primary source — not an older survey year or a third-party review aggregator — is the one to check.
Pay, banding and why there's no HCAS
Pay at this trust runs on the same national Agenda for Change pay bands as any other NHS trust — Band 2 through Band 9, plus medical and dental scales for psychiatrists. Because the trust's entire catchment sits in West and South Yorkshire, well outside London and its recognised fringe area, no High Cost Area Supplement applies to any post here, regardless of band or service. That means take-home pay comparisons against a similarly banded post at a London mental health trust need to account for the HCAS gap directly — a Band 6 post here and a Band 6 post at an Inner London trust sit on the same national pay point before HCAS, but the London post then adds a substantial percentage uplift this trust's posts do not receive. Use the NHS Pay Calculator to see the actual gap for your specific band.
Unsocial hours and forensic rota work
Newton Lodge's medium secure wards, the trust's acute and PICU wards, and its crisis and community teams all involve significant out-of-hours and rota-based working, so night, weekend and bank holiday shifts are a routine part of many clinical roles here — particularly on the forensic and acute wards covered in the CQC section above. The Unsocial Hours Calculator shows what a genuine rota pattern adds on top of band pay, which is worth checking before comparing an inpatient or forensic role here against a more predictable community post.
This trust vs Mersey Care
Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust is a sensible, real-world comparison for anyone weighing this trust against another specialist mental health employer outside London — both sit entirely outside any HCAS zone, and both run a distinct high-security or medium-security forensic service alongside general mental health provision, though at very different scales.
South West Yorkshire Partnership Teaching NHS Foundation Trust
A mid-sized trust (around 4,235 WTE staff, £230 million budget) serving four West and South Yorkshire districts, with a 90-bed medium secure forensic unit (Newton Lodge) taking referrals across all of Yorkshire and the Humber. Overall CQC rating Good, though acute, PICU and forensic wards were rated Requires Improvement at a 2023 focused inspection. Newly designated a Teaching Trust in partnership with the University of Leeds (October 2025). No HCAS applies anywhere in its catchment.
Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust
A considerably larger specialist trust (around 11,000 staff) serving Merseyside and, since 2021, parts of Lancashire and Cheshire, running Ashworth Hospital — one of only three high-secure psychiatric hospitals in England and Wales. Overall CQC rating Good (Outstanding for caring and well-led, Requires Improvement for safe and effective), and a 2024 NHS Staff Survey result above its comparator group average on most measured themes, from a 48% response rate. No HCAS applies here either.
The key practical difference for a forensic career specifically is the level of security: Newton Lodge is a medium secure unit, while Ashworth is one of only three high-secure hospitals in the whole of England and Wales, so the patient population, security protocols and staff training requirements differ meaningfully between the two. Use the NHS Trust Comparison Tool to check either trust against a specific role you're considering.
Why someone might specifically want to join
- A genuinely regional forensic service — Newton Lodge's 90 beds and seven wards offer forensic nursing, psychology and OT staff a substantial, purpose-built medium secure environment with a catchment across all of Yorkshire and the Humber, not just the trust's four home districts.
- New Teaching Trust status — the October 2025 partnership with the University of Leeds is a genuine, recent investment signal for anyone applying to training-grade or student placement roles.
- A defined, mid-sized catchment — four West and South Yorkshire districts is a more contained geography than some of the largest English mental health trusts, which can suit staff who want a predictable travel area.
- An honestly mixed but stable CQC picture — an overall Good rating with clearly named areas for improvement (safe overall, and specific acute/PICU/forensic wards) rather than either an unblemished record or a trust-wide crisis.

Your employer, not just your role
South West Yorkshire Partnership Teaching NHS Foundation Trust is your legal employer if you work here, which is what continuous service and any redundancy pay calculation is based on — worth knowing given the trust's relatively recent name change, since older employment records and references may still show the pre-October-2025 name.
