School Nurse Salary 2026/27: Band 6 NHS Pay
Independent guidance — not affiliated with NHS England or DHSC
This page is for registered nurses and midwives who are thinking about school nursing, children's nurses wondering what a move into the community would pay, and school nurses checking their band. It covers one role: the school nurse who is a specialist community public health nurse. It is not about the nurse in a school's sickroom, and it is not about health visiting, which is a separate specialism. For the training route, see how to become a nurse first, and for the pay ladder around this role, Band 6 nurse salary. FrontlinePay is independent and every band figure comes from the published 2026/27 tables.
Short answer
A school nurse is paid on Bands 6 to 7: £39,959 at the bottom to £56,515 at the top in England for 2026/27 (£40,559 to £57,365 in Wales; £43,231 to £61,466 in Scotland). NHS Careers says NHS school nurses typically start at Band 6 under Agenda for Change. That is above a newly qualified nurse, because a school nurse is a registered nurse or midwife who has also completed a specialist community public health nursing (SCPHN) course. The thing readers most often get wrong: school nursing is not an entry-level nursing job, and it is not always an NHS job. Many school nurses are employed by local authorities, charities or private providers, whose terms can differ.

⚠Not a Band 5 nursing job, and not always NHS employed
A newly qualified nurse starts on Band 5. To work as a school nurse you must first be a registered nurse or midwife and then complete the SCPHN school nursing qualification, normally while sponsored or seconded by an employer. NHS Careers adds that school nurses are employed by the NHS, local authorities, private healthcare providers, charities and community interest companies, and that terms and conditions can differ outside the NHS.

Scotland's rates
NHS Scotland has its own 2026/27 table. For this role it runs from £43,231 to £61,466. Band 6: £43,231 to £52,679. Band 7: £52,845 to £61,466. See NHS Scotland pay scales 2026/27 for every band.
Why school nursing starts at Band 6
NHS Careers describes school nurses as specialist community public health nurses who support school-aged children, young people and their families. They lead the Healthy Child Programme for ages 5 to 19, and work with schools and other professionals on safeguarding, mental health, health assessments, relationships and sex education, lifestyle support and young people with long-term health needs. They lead teams that include community staff nurses and nursery nurses. NHS school nurses usually work 37.5 hours a week under Agenda for Change and, according to NHS Careers, typically start at Band 6.
That starting band reflects the job and the qualification. The national nursing profile for Band 6 describes a nurse who assesses patients with complex needs, plans and evaluates care, may carry a caseload in the community and supervises others. A school nurse has already qualified as a nurse or midwife and then trained for a year in specialist practice, so the starting point is not the same as a newly registered nurse's.
A band comes from matching the job description to a national profile, not from the job title. NHS Employers does not list a separate school nurse profile among its nursing and health visitor profiles that we could find, so school nurse posts are normally matched to the nursing profiles. That is why bands can differ between employers, and why it is worth reading the job description, not the title. If your duties are broader than your band, see NHS band regrading and appeals.
The route in: SCPHN training and registration
NHS Careers says you must be a registered midwife, or an adult, child, mental health or learning disability nurse, and that you must be sponsored or seconded by a health provider organisation, which arranges your placement and supervision. The qualification is Specialist Community Public Health Nursing: School Nursing, offered at degree or master's level. Full time it lasts 52 weeks, part-time options run longer, and some areas offer it as a master's-level apprenticeship. The course is split roughly half university theory and half supervised practice.
The Royal College of Nursing's careers resource describes the same route in a worked example of a children's ward nurse moving to school nursing: the specialist community public health nursing course can be one year full time, two years part time or an 18-month apprenticeship, and routes in include applying for a staff nurse post in a school nursing team, with leadership or practice teacher roles later.
After training, the Nursing and Midwifery Council records school nurses in the specialist community public health nursing part of its register, with its own entry for school nurse and a separate one for health visitor.
Pay during training is not given on NHS Careers. The sponsoring employer sets it, and practice varies, so ask before you apply whether you keep your current band or move onto a student rate, and whether the employer expects you to stay for a period after qualifying. Our study leave and CPD funding guide covers the questions to ask about funded training.
Who employs school nurses, and what that does to terms
NHS Careers says many school nurses work for the NHS, and others work for local authorities, private healthcare providers, charities or community interest companies, where terms and conditions can differ. If you are paid on Agenda for Change, the bands in this page apply. If you are employed outside the NHS, the employer sets the pay scale, leave and pension, and it may or may not mirror the NHS bands.
Before you accept a school nursing post, ask:
- Who is the employer named on the contract?
- Does the post follow Agenda for Change pay and the NHS Terms and Conditions Handbook, and which band is it?
- What pension is offered, and is it the NHS Pension Scheme or a different one?
- Is the post term-time only, or year round? NHS Careers describes a standard 37.5-hour week for NHS school nurses. Our term-time only contracts guide explains what term-time contracts do to pay and leave.
If a service moves from one provider to another, your terms can be affected. Our what transfers when you move trusts guide covers the NHS-to-NHS case, and a union rep or your HR team is the right place for the rest.
Pay in practice: points, progression and unsocial hours
Band 6 in England for 2026/27 runs from £39,959 to £48,117 over three pay points, and Band 7 from £49,387 to £56,515. A school nurse normally starts at the first point and moves up at their incremental date, which our pay progression guide explains. After the top of Band 6, higher pay means a different job: the Band 7 nursing leadership profile covers a role that provides leadership and management to registered and non-registered staff, and some school nursing team leader posts match it.
Unsocial hours are not a large part of most school nurses' pay, because the work follows the school day. Where an NHS rota includes evenings or weekends, Section 2 of the NHS Terms and Conditions Handbook adds an enhancement, which our unsocial hours guide sets out. NHS Careers lists benefits that include a pension scheme, health service discounts and at least 27 days' annual leave plus bank holidays.
Take-home figures for any point are in the worked example below. Our NHS Pay Calculator takes account of your student loan, pension and London weighting.
If you are comparing a school nursing offer with a hospital job at the same band, remember that the school nursing role carries no enhancement for nights unless the post is rostered. Our Band 6 nurse salary guide shows the same Band 6 figures for ward-based roles with shift pay.
What comes after school nursing
NHS Careers lists progression into operational or management roles, quality and governance, service transformation and commissioning. School nurses can also move into community teaching, practice assessing, clinical academic research, and lecturing or research at a university.
Some of those steps are paid on the same band and some are a band up. A management post that matches the Band 7 leadership profile moves you from the Band 6 range into Band 7. A move into teaching or research is matched to the profile that fits the new job, so the band depends on the duties. If you are weighing a specialist route against an advanced practice one, the ACP route, pay and training explains the advanced practice option, and health visitor salary covers the sister SCPHN specialism.
The children's nursing routes into school nursing are covered in paediatric nurse salary, because the Royal College of Nursing's own example of a school nurse's route starts on a children's ward. Whichever way you move, ask the employer how long the post is funded for and what support it gives for the leadership and practice teacher roles that follow.
School nursing in Scotland
NHS Scotland uses the same band numbers on its own 2026/27 table: Band 6 is £43,231 to £52,679 and Band 7 is £52,845 to £61,466, against £39,959 to £48,117 and £49,387 to £56,515 in England. NMC registration and the SCPHN qualification are UK-wide, so the same course leads to the same register entry.
The Scottish table has fewer and larger pay points than England's, so a Scottish school nurse reaches the top of their band sooner. The structure is explained on NHS Scotland pay scales 2026/27. Since 1 April 2026 the Agenda for Change working week in NHS Scotland has been 36 hours, which affects hourly rates but not annual salary.
If you are comparing posts across the border, compare the point you would land on rather than the band label, and check who the employer is. As in England, a school nurse employed by a local authority, charity or private provider may be on different terms from an NHS board.
