NHS Scotland Band 3 Pay 2026/27: £29,103 to £31,409
Independent guidance — not affiliated with NHS England or DHSC
This page is for senior healthcare support workers, clinical support workers, emergency care assistants, therapy support workers, admin officers and anyone else on or moving to Band 3 in NHS Scotland. It gives the two 2026/27 pay points from Scottish Government circular PCS(AFC)2026/1, how the two-year wait on point 1 works, what you take home after Scottish tax, and how Band 3 compares with England, where Band 3 pay starts below even the Scottish Band 2 top. FrontlinePay is independent of NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government.
Short answer
NHS Scotland Band 3 pays £29,103 at point 1 up to £31,409 at point 2 for a full-time 36-hour week in 2026/27 (circular PCS(AFC)2026/1). That is £15.50 to £16.73 an hour. You reach the top point after 2 years in the band, and a Scottish taxpayer on point 1 takes home about £1,907 a month after tax, National Insurance and the NHS Pension Scheme (Scotland). Scottish Band 3 point 1 (£29,103) is higher than the starting salary of England's Band 4 (£28,392).
NHS Scotland Band 3

Scotland is £3,343 higher at the bottom and £3,933 higher at the top, on a shorter week.
Which jobs are Band 3 in NHS Scotland
Band 3 sits at a job weight of 216 to 270 points under the NHS Job Evaluation Scheme (Scottish Handbook Section 1, Table 1). In practice it is the band for support roles with delegated clinical or technical responsibility. NHS Employers describes the Band 3 healthcare support worker profile as covering a limited range of clinical tasks done under supervision, as distinct from Band 2, which is concerned with personal care. Examples it gives include checking blood pressure, monitoring blood glucose, carrying out pregnancy tests, observing mothers and newborns, assessing wounds and applying simple dressings, removing peripheral cannulas and catheters, and urinalysis.
NHS Careers lists emergency care assistant and occupational therapy support worker as UK-wide Band 3 examples. In NHS Scotland the national evaluations list the Healthcare Support Worker post in the Scottish Government's community health nursing pilot at Band 3. NHS Lothian's Modern Apprenticeship adverts show how the Scottish entry route differs from Band 2: the Band 3 clinical support worker needs National 5 or above in English, Mathematics and Biology or Chemistry at grade C, or an SVQ Level 2 in Health or Social Care, plus the ability to carry out delegated responsibilities in a clinical setting. That is one board's requirement and other boards set their own, so read the advert.
Band 3 posts are also found in administration and technical services. As ever the band belongs to the evaluated job rather than the title (Handbook 1.2 to 1.4). For Band 2 and Band 3 disputes, read our guide to HCA regrading and back pay. For the route into support work see how to become a healthcare assistant.
Band 3 pay points in NHS Scotland, 2026/27
| Pay point | Annual | Monthly (gross) | Hourly (36-hour week) | Overtime hour (time and a half) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 | £29,103 | £2,425.25 | £15.50 | £23.25 |
| Point 2 | £31,409 | £2,617.42 | £16.73 | £25.10 |
Source: Scottish Government NHS Circular PCS(AFC)2026/1 (23 January 2026), Annex B. Monthly figures are one twelfth of the annual salary. Hourly rates are annual pay divided by 52.143 weeks and 36 hours, rounded to the penny, and match the hourly column in the circular.
The two points are £29,103 and £31,409: £2,425.25 and £2,617.42 a month before deductions. The step is £2,306 (7.9%). Band 3 point 1 is only £115 above the top of Band 2, and Band 3 point 2 is £128 below the first point of Band 4, so the gaps between the bottom bands are small and the real pay gain comes from the long journey inside each band.
These are the rates after a 3.75% uplift on the 2025/26 figures. That earlier year was itself topped up to 4.4% under the CPI inflation guarantee, and the guarantee applies again to 2026/27: a further payment is due in March 2027 if average CPI in calendar 2026 comes in above 2.75% (circular PCS(AFC)2026/1, Annex A).
Band 3 year-by-year pay journey
Scotland does not move you up a point every year. The Scottish Agenda for Change Handbook (Section 1, Table 1a) sets how long you stay on each point, and the 2026/27 pay journey in the circular shows it year by year. Progression is on your incremental date, which is the anniversary of the day you started in the post (Handbook 1.15).
| Year in band | Pay point | Annual salary | Change on previous year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Point 1 | £29,103 | Starting salary |
| Year 2 | Point 1 | £29,103 | No step this year |
| Year 3 | Point 2 | £31,409 | +£2,306 a year |
These are the 2026/27 rates. Every pay point rises with each pay award, so a year-3 salary in a later year will be higher than the figure shown here. Time on each point: point 1 for 2 years; point 2 for 1 year.
Band 3 has the same shape as Band 2: two years on point 1 and the second point from year 3, so you are at the top after two full years. Table 1a in Section 1 of the Scottish Handbook sets the timetable. That is identical to England's Band 3, which pays £25,760 for under two years and £27,476 after two years (NHS Careers). The step in Scotland on your incremental date is £2,306 a year, against £1,716 in England.
If you are promoted from Band 2, the incremental date resets to the anniversary of the promotion (Handbook 1.15) and the Handbook (1.12) places you on the first point of Band 3 that increases your pay once basic pay, any long-term premium and your unsocial hours payment are combined. If you move to a different post in the same band in the same board you keep your incremental date. Arrivals from other UK NHS employers are placed as though all their service had been in NHS Scotland (1.10), so someone with two or more years' Band 3 service can expect to join on point 2. Progression is automatic in all but exceptional circumstances (6.16).
Band 3 take-home pay for a Scottish taxpayer
This table uses Scottish Income Tax rates for 2026/27, Class 1 National Insurance and the NHS Pension Scheme (Scotland) member contribution rate for each salary, for a full-time member who pays no student loan and has no other income. The standard tax-free Personal Allowance of £12,570 applies.
| Pay point | Gross | Pension (rate) | Income tax | National Insurance | Net a year | Net a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 | £29,103 | £2,037 (7.0%) | £2,859 | £1,323 | £22,884 | £1,907 |
| Point 2 | £31,409 | £2,199 (7.0%) | £3,288 | £1,507 | £24,415 | £2,035 |
Pension contributions come off before income tax (the net pay arrangement) but not before National Insurance. The pension rate is the Scottish scheme tier for that salary from circular 2026/03 of the Scottish Public Pensions Agency (see NHS Scotland pension differences), which can differ from the England tier for the same pay. Continuing members are placed using last year's pay, but because the tier edges line up with the pay points, each point lands in the same tier on either table.
Like Band 2, Band 3 gets a small Scottish tax advantage over the rest of the UK because of the 19% starter rate: £40 a year less income tax than an rUK taxpayer on the same salary and pension. Take-home is £1,907 a month on point 1 and £2,035 on point 2. The 21% intermediate rate starts at £29,527, but after the pension deduction neither Band 3 point has pay in that band, so the whole of the band pays 19% then 20%.
The Scottish pension tier is 7.0% at both points, which is £2,037 at point 1 and £2,199 at point 2. The England tier for Band 3 is 6.5%, so Scottish members pay a little more towards their pension. The point 1 to point 2 increase of £2,306 a year gross is worth about £1,531 net a year.
Band 3 hourly rates, unsocial hours and overtime
Band 3 point 1 is £15.50 an hour and point 2 is £16.73 on the 36-hour week. These hourly rates are higher than they were because the full-time week fell from 37 to 36 hours on 1 April 2026, and the Scottish Government's circular says that applies to unsocial hours enhancements and anything else linked to hourly rates (PCS(AFC)2025/8, Annex B). See NHS Scotland 36-hour week explained for the part-time rules.
Band 3 sits between Band 2's 44% and 88% and the 30% and 60% paid from Band 4: time plus 37% for Saturdays and weekday hours from 8pm to 6am, and time plus 74% for Sundays and public holidays (Handbook Section 2, Table 2). England's Band 3 rates are 35% and 69%. At point 1 a Scottish Band 3 night hour pays £21.24 and a Sunday hour £26.97. Overtime is time and a half (£23.25), double time on public holidays.
One practical warning. Because the enhancement percentage falls from 37%/74% at Band 3 to 30%/60% at Band 4, a promotion can reduce what you earn per night or Sunday hour even though plain-time pay rises. Compare a Band 3 point 2 night hour (£22.92) with a Band 4 point 1 night hour (£21.84), or a Sunday hour of £29.11 against £26.88. That is why Handbook 1.12 tests the new point against basic pay and unsocial hours payments combined if your working pattern stays the same. If you work a lot of nights or weekends, ask HR to model the new salary before accepting a higher band, and use our unsocial hours calculator to test your own rota.
| Pay point | Plain time | Night or Saturday (+37%) | Sunday or public holiday (+74%) | Overtime (x1.5) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 | £15.50 | £21.24 | £26.97 | £23.25 |
| Point 2 | £16.73 | £22.92 | £29.11 | £25.10 |
Hourly figures per hour worked, before tax. Unsocial hours percentages are from Table 2 of Section 2 of the Scottish Handbook: night means weekday hours after 8pm and before 6am. Overtime is time and a half under Section 3, and double time on general public holidays (£31.00 an hour at point 1). Overtime starts after 36 hours a week for a full-timer; see the 36-hour week explained.
Band 3 in Scotland compared with England
| Scotland point | Scotland (36-hour week) | England equivalent (37.5-hour week) | Scotland ahead by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Point 1 | £29,103 | £25,760 (under 2 years) | +£3,343 (13.0%) |
| Point 2 | £31,409 | £27,476 (2+ years) | +£3,933 (14.3%) |
England figures are the 2026/27 NHS Employers Agenda for Change rates, with the years-of-service steps NHS Careers shows. Compared like for like, the hourly rate at the bottom of the band is £15.50 in Scotland and £13.17 in England (17.7% higher in Scotland). After tax, National Insurance and each country's pension rate, entry-point take-home is £1,907 a month in Scotland against £1,727 in England.
England's Band 3 is £25,760 for the first two years and £27,476 after that. Scottish Band 3 pays £3,343 (13.0%) more at the start and £3,933 (14.3%) more at the top, and per hour worked it is £15.50 against £13.17, 17.7% higher because of the shorter week. After tax and pension, Scottish take-home is £180 a month higher at the start of the band and £212 higher at the top. That is the biggest take-home gap of any band in this series, because Band 3 is both a big pay gap and a small tax cost.
Scottish Band 3 point 1 is also £711 above England's Band 4 starting salary and -£2,054 short of its Band 4 top. For London, the High Cost Area Supplement in England adds at least £5,794 in inner London, so an England Band 3 there earns £31,554 or more. See the England page NHS Band 3 salary 2026/27 and NHS Scotland vs England pay compared.
Moving up to Band 4
From the top of Band 3 (£31,409) to Band 4 point 1 (£31,537) the basic gain is £128 a year. That is about £7 a month in take-home, and as the section on hours above shows the enhancement percentages fall at Band 4. The more substantial gain is from the bottom of Band 3 (£29,103) to the bottom of Band 4: £2,434 a year, and the Band 4 journey is a year longer (three years on point 1 before point 2).
So a move to Band 4 is most valuable early in Band 3 and least valuable at the top. If you are on the top point and thinking about an assistant practitioner or similar post, weigh the longer wait for the second Band 4 point against the small immediate increase. Our promotion pay comparison calculator shows the net effect of a specific move, and the NHS Scotland Band 4 pay page has the next band's figures.
Band 3 and job evaluation
Because the Band 2 and Band 3 profiles turn on whether you perform delegated clinical tasks, many Band 3 questions are really grading questions. NHS Employers has said its 2021 wording changes to the Band 2 and Band 3 healthcare support worker profiles were only to make the difference clearer, with the levels and scores unchanged. It also advises employers to keep job descriptions up to date and to put roles that have changed through job evaluation, with backdating of any change decided locally. In Scotland the job evaluation system is the NHS Job Evaluation Scheme operated in partnership, as described in Handbook Section 1 and Section 47.
If you are on Band 3 and your work has moved up to Band 4 level, or you do Band 3 work on Band 2, your route is a review through your board's job evaluation process. Gather your job description, evidence of what you actually do and your union representative's advice first; our guide to challenging your NHS pay band sets out how, and the back pay calculator estimates arrears if a regrade is backdated.

Where these figures come from
FrontlinePay is independent and not part of NHS Scotland or the Scottish Government. Pay points are taken from the published Scottish circular, take-home pay is calculated with the same Income Tax and National Insurance engine as our NHS Pay Calculator, and the Scottish pension tiers are applied to each salary. Last checked October 2026. The 2026/27 rates are subject to the Scottish CPI inflation guarantee, so a further top-up is possible in early 2027; we will update this page if one is confirmed.
