The real difference in practice is the shift pattern: a GP-based or urgent-treatment-centre post is often Monday-to-Friday daytime hours, meaning far less unsocial hours pay than a 24/7 ambulance rota, even at the identical pay point.
What comes after Band 5 for paramedics? +
Band 6 is next — typically a Specialist Paramedic post covering urgent or community care, or a more senior seat on a Double-Crewed Ambulance. There's no automatic escalator; it requires applying for and being appointed to a specific Band 6 post, usually within two to four years of registering.
