Bank Holiday Leave Planner: Get More Days Off in 2027

Pick your nation and how many leave days you can spend, and see the exact days to book around bank holidays to make the longest breaks. Official gov.uk dates for 2026 to 2028.

Short answer

In 2027 in England and Wales, 7 days of leave can give you 20 days off in two breaks, and using up to 19 days across 5 breaks turns them into 47 days off. The planner below finds the best set of bridge days for your nation and leave budget, using real bank holiday dates from gov.uk.

Plan your leave around bank holidays

Each nation has its own official bank holidays. Pick where you work.

Dates that have already passed are left out.

Count working days, not hours. Full-time NHS staff on under 5 years get 27 days plus 8 public holidays, so if you book bank holidays as leave, include them. Set it to the days you actually want to put towards long breaks.

Where the dates come from

Bank holiday dates for 2026, 2027 and 2028 are taken from gov.uk, checked on 7 October 2026, including substitute days. Your employer may not give every bank holiday off, and NHS staff who work them are given time off in lieu, so check your own rota. Bridges are suggestions: your own service needs and annual leave rules come first.

Best days to take off in 2027: England and Wales

There are six bridges in 2027 for England and Wales, because Easter falls in March and the Christmas holidays are substitute days. In date order:

Take offLeave daysYou getDays off
Mon 22 Mar to Thu 25 Mar 4 Sat 20 Mar to Mon 29 Mar 10
Tue 30 Mar to Fri 2 Apr 4 Fri 26 Mar to Sun 4 Apr 10
Tue 4 May to Fri 7 May 4 Sat 1 May to Sun 9 May 9
Tue 1 Jun to Fri 4 Jun 4 Sat 29 May to Sun 6 Jun 9
Tue 31 Aug to Fri 3 Sept 4 Sat 28 Aug to Sun 5 Sept 9
Wed 29 Dec to Fri 31 Dec 3 Sat 25 Dec to Mon 3 Jan 10

If you only have a few days to spare, the best value is the Christmas bridge (3 days for 10) and the Easter bridge in March. The best set of non-overlapping breaks (5 of them) turns 19 leave days into 47 days off, an extra 28 days. The two Easter breaks overlap, so the planner counts only one of them, but you can book both: 8 leave days then give 16 days off from 20 March to 4 April.

Scotland and Northern Ireland in 2027

Scotland has more bridges (8) because it has 2 January and St Andrew's Day in the mix, and its Easter weekend is shorter: there is no Easter Monday. With a big budget the plan reaches 61 days off for 24 leave days. Northern Ireland has 9 bridges and reaches 61 days off for 25 leave days. Choose your nation above to see your own dates.

How the planner works

It lists every working day from 2026 to 2028, marks weekends and the bank holidays for your nation as free days, and looks for gaps of one to four working days between two free blocks. Each gap is a bridge: the leave days it costs, the break it creates and the days off per leave day. A dynamic programme then picks the combination of bridges that do not overlap and give the most extra days off for your budget, which beats simply picking the highest ratios first. Nothing is estimated: if the calendar and gov.uk dates are right, the answer is exact.

⚠Check before you book

The planner assumes every bank holiday is a day off. NHS staff and other shift workers who are rostered on a bank holiday are owed time off in lieu rather than the day itself, so check your rota. Leave also needs approval, and school holidays, ward cover and your trust's leave year (usually 1 April to 31 March) may rule some breaks out. Dates come from gov.uk/bank-holidays, checked 7 October 2026.

NHS staff: leave, public holidays and your rota

Under Agenda for Change you get 27, 29 or 33 days of annual leave depending on service, plus 8 general public holidays; use the Annual Leave Calculator to turn that into days and hours for your own contract, and the Annual Leave Tracker to log what you book. If you work bank holidays, see NHS bank holiday pay for the enhanced rate and time off in lieu, and the annual leave entitlement guide for how the leave year works.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bridge day? +
A bridge day is a working day (or short run of working days) that sits between two blocks of free time such as a weekend and a bank holiday. Take just those days as leave and the two blocks join into one long break. The planner finds them from the real calendar and the official gov.uk bank holiday dates, so the results are exact.
What are the best days to take off in 2027 in England and Wales? +
Using the planner's maths, the two breaks that stand out are Easter and Christmas. Easter 2027 falls in March, so taking Monday 22 to Thursday 25 March (4 days) gives you ten days in a row, Saturday 20 to Monday 29 March. Add Tuesday 30 March to Friday 2 April (4 more days) and it becomes 16 days off from 20 March to 4 April. At Christmas, taking Wednesday 29 to Friday 31 December (3 days) gives 10 days off in a row, because Christmas Day and Boxing Day are substitute days on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December and New Year's Day 2028 is substituted to Monday 3 January.
Are the bank holidays different in Scotland and Northern Ireland? +
Yes. Scotland has 2 January (a substitute on Monday 4 January in 2027) and St Andrew's Day but no Easter Monday, and its summer bank holiday is in early August. Northern Ireland adds St Patrick's Day and the Battle of the Boyne on top of the England and Wales set. That is why the planner asks for your nation first.
Where do the bank holiday dates come from? +
From gov.uk's official bank holiday list, which currently covers 2026, 2027 and 2028 for all three jurisdictions. We checked it on 7 October 2026 and include the substitute days gov.uk lists when a holiday falls on a weekend.
How many leave days should I enter? +
Enter the number of working days you are happy to spend on long breaks, not your whole entitlement. Count days, not hours: if your leave is in hours, divide by the length of your normal day. The annual leave calculator on this site converts hours to days for you.
Does it work for NHS staff? +
Yes. NHS staff get a separate 8-day public holiday entitlement, and if you are rostered to work a bank holiday you are owed time off in lieu. The planner shows bridges as if bank holidays were days off for everyone; if you work them, check your rota before booking. Your trust's leave year (usually 1 April to 31 March) also matters, which is why there is an NHS leave year option in the period selector.
Is the plan the best possible? +
It is the best combination of non-overlapping bridges for your leave budget, measured by the extra days off you gain beyond the leave you spend. It is not the only good plan: the table lists every bridge so you can swap in a break that suits your family, school holidays or rota better.
Can I put the plan in my calendar? +
Yes. Use 'Add to calendar (.ics)' to download one all-day event per break, which opens in Google Calendar, Outlook and Apple Calendar. The file is created in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
